Civil Engineering

Department of Civil Engineering, one of the centers of quality education in BIT Raipur, is imparting knowledge in the fields of Structural engineering, Environmental engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Transportation and Geotechnical Engineering at Under Graduate level. The department has improved computing facilities and laboratories for testing, research and consultancy.

The civil engineering lost the battle over the last two decades is a story of how bricks and mortar lost their glamour to clicks — the IT boom, fuelled by a growing army of foot soldiers in computer science and electronics reduced civil engineering to an "old economy" disciple.

Civil engineering is back again

Industry experts estimate that India faces a shortage of over 70,000 civil engineers each year. Not surprising, when you have just one in ten IIT students opting for the civil engineering discipline and only 200 of the 1700 engineering colleges approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) offer the course. There are huge opportunities in Civil Engineering recently in NHAI and PWD there are over 70,000 vacancies… All IIT's taken together graduate barely 500-600 civil engineering students and estimates are that not more than a total of 10,000 civil engineers are created in India per year.

Courses Offered

Engineering courses are available at two levels. There are the degree and postgraduate degree courses offered by the engineering colleges and Institutes of Technology (IITs), and, the diploma courses available at polytechnics.

There is also the Associate Membership Examination of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE), which enables working people in the private and public sector, or diploma holders to acquire a Bachelor's engineering degree through distance education.

Post Graduation/Higher Studies

Selection to the postgraduate courses (M.Tech/M.E) in different universities is through an 'All India Combined Entrance Exam' conducted by JNU, New Delhi and to IIT's through 'GATE' in Two year/4 semesters M.Tech/M.E. courses and through JEE in five year integrated M.Tech/M.E. courses.

GATE

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), and Government of India.

Admission to postgraduate programmes with MHRD and some other Government scholarships/assistantships in engineering colleges/institutes is open to those Only who qualify in GATE examination.

Taking a cue from Indian Oil Corp (IOC), several other public-sector oil companies, barring Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), are looking at hiring engineers in entry-level positions based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Last year, IOC, India's largest fuel retailer, had recruited 200 engineers on the basis of their GATE scores.
